Holidays and Haiku

The holidays are a mixed bag – joy and sorrow come closer together at this time of year than at any other time. It can be a very emo-ho-ho-tional time for many of us. My birthday is Christmas Day so a lot is really condensed into the holiday season for me. Writing haiku, or writing anything, is a lovely thing to take time out to do for yourself. That is why when I founded National Haiku Poetry Day several years ago, it fell on the winter solstice. Starting in 2012, National Haiku Poetry Day will be on April 17 and is now under the auspices of the Haiku Foundation. More on that in the months ahead.
